Current Intern at Bethel
I am a woman of faith, working to deepen my own faith and to share that faith with others. My journey has been varied, but I'm still on the journey.
I was born and lived in Maquoketa, Iowa. When I was in the sixth grade, we moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My father worked as a hired hand on a large farming operation east of Marion. My mother worked as a nurse's aide. I have one brother, John. He is married with one son. John works as a mechanic for the city of Cedar Rapids. I have one sister, who is a housewife and lives with her husband in Solon, Iowa. I lived in the Cedar Rapids/Marion most of my life.
I met and married Don Hepker. He was a window clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. He had two children, Tammy and Jeff. They both reside and work in Cedar Rapids with their families. Don committed suicide in October 2002.
My son, Craig, is married to Heidi. They live in Marion. Craig works for the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Heidi works for U.S. Cellular. They have three boys, Keaton, 18. He is in basic training for the National Guard this summer. Aaron turns ten on the second of August; he is thrilled to be turning ten. Ryan is six.
I have one other grandchild, Serena. She is 20, lives with her adopted family, and works at Goodwill in Cedar Rapids. I get to visit her frequently. One of my favorite activities to do with her is to take her lunch on her lunch break and have lunch together.
After being out of high school for many years, I graduated from Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with an Associate of Arts degree in Handicapped Services. I earned my BA in Theology from Mt. Mercy College, Cedar Rapids, in May 2001. I started seminary at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, with Summer Greek 2001. After Don's death, I took a leave from seminary. I needed to discover who I was as a single woman.
During the next four years I held a variety of positions and had much counseling. Finally, in September, 2006, I realized I had to return to seminary and finish what I had originally started. I contacted my bishop and started the process to return to seminary. You can run, but you can't hide from God. So, Summer Greek 2007 marked my return to Wartburg.
I enjoy watching television, especially programs about home improvement. I cross country ski, enjoy scrap booking, painting icons or watercolors, playing computer games, and visiting with friends and family. I enjoy music, listening more than playing.
I'm really thrilled and excited to be at Bethel as an intern. When I left seminary in May 2003, I never thought I would ever get to return, let alone make it to the ‘step' of internship.
